The Butterfly Story

One of the things I learned before becoming a better designer was to be a better artist. I was tasked with telling a story only using images. My love for butterflies influenced this story. I hand drew the metamorphosis of a caterpillar becoming a beautiful butterfly. In the first image, I wanted to zoom in really close to the caterpillar, but after the butterfly emerges, the tree that held the cocoon enters the scene as the butterfly is flying away.

Later, I decided to give these drawings a story with words. I found a story called “Cocoon and the Butterfly” written by and anonymous author. I love the message behind the story and feel that it represents me as an artist and designer. My designs looked and felt amateurish, but as I grew in my craft, I found myself creating pieces that I never thought I would have done before. Like the butterfly, it was a struggle for me, but I wouldn’t learn and grow in my craft if someone did it for me.
